For centuries the cat has played a major role in the lives of humans and has had a violent and eventful history, having been both worshiped as a god and persecuted and a devil. Now it has reached a position midway between the adulation heaped upon it but the peoples of ancient Egypt and the terrible tortures meted out to it in the middle ages. even today, too much cosseting can prove detrimental to the health of pet cats, and still some forms of cruelty must be guarded against. although the first cats were probably domesticated by caveman, who, for reasons best known to themselves, decided to allow cats to live with them instead of eating them, the first real records of cat cat-keeping date back to Egypt, about four thousand years ago. by this time the cat had evolved successfully, having shared a common ancestor with dogs, bears, civets and other mammals: a tiny, tenacious, weasel-like creature called miacis. this small mammal lived some 50 million years ago in the Eocene period, when the earth was undergoing violent changes, and only the forms of life most capable of adaption could adjust sufficiently to survive and breed.
